The Pomodoro Technique
Learn how a kitchen timer can make you more productive
- achieve your goals and increase productivity and focus
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique is based on the idea that breaking up work into short, focused periods of time, with frequent breaks in between, can help to increase productivity, improve mental agility, and reduce feelings of burnout. The method is named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used as a student to track his work sessions.
The technique involves setting a timer to work into 25-minute intervals, called "Pomodoros," with short breaks in between. When the timer goes off you take short 5-minute breaks and after four Pomodoros, a longer break (15-30 minutes) is taken before setting another round.
The technique helps to eliminate distractions and procrastination.

Small work chunks also help with focus. The short, focused work sessions help to keep you on task, while the breaks provide an opportunity to rest and recharge.

By taking frequent breaks, you are less likely to become mentally fatigued, which can lead to decreased productivity and an increased likelihood of procrastination.

Work with Intention with Pomodoro
The Pomodoro Technique encourages you to work in a more focused and intentional way, which can help to reduce distractions and improve overall productivity.
Stay Motivated with Pomodoro
In addition to becoming more focused you will be motivated to complete tasks during the Pomodoro session. You will find yourself even working faster and motivated to complete tasks quicker.
You also get motivated by completing the smaller tasks than trying to tackle it all in one big overwhelming task.

Instead of continuously tweaking and reworking, the work stops when the timer stops. Stick to your Pomodoro schedule. Done is better than perfect.
The Pomodoro Technique is a flexible method, and you can adjust the duration of their work sessions and breaks to suit your needs. Some people may prefer longer work sessions, while others may need shorter sessions. Experimenting with different settings can help your find the best balance.
You can work more efficiently and effectively with the Pomodoro Technique.

6 Ways to Use The Pomodoro Method in Business
Here are 6 ways to use the Pomodoro Method in your business. To get a more detailed look at how I use Pomodoro check out the Pomodoro for Business Planner.
1. Improve weekly and monthly planning with Pomodoro. The Pomodoro method forces you to prioritize your work and time in addition to scheduling time to focus on completing the Pomodoro. In time you will be able to estimate how many Pomodoros will be needed to complete a task and schedule your time accordingly.
2. Wear one hat during a Pomodoro session. As entrepreneurs we wear many hats during the day. Throughout the day I am a marketer, author, bookkeeper, consultant and more. With Pomodoro, only focus on one business area per a session.
3. Control Your Time with Pomodoro. When using the Pomodoro Technique put the time in your schedule to show busy time. Eliminate distractions and minimize interruptions. Before you start your Pomodoro remove any distractions and turn off notifications. Let your team know this is interruption free zone.
With Pomodoro you can see exactly how you use your time, where you have free time (which will you get more of), and you can review your accomplishments.
Pomodoro for Teams
4. Encourage your team to use Pomodoro during the workday. This can be done by providing a timer or an app that employees can use to track their Pomodoros, and support their breaks at regular intervals.
5. Use Pomodoros to manage team meetings. Your team can use a Pomodoro to set a time limit for discussing a specific topic, with a break in between to allow for reflection and follow-up.
6. You can also use Pomodoro for coworking. You can work with your team during a Pomodoro session on a specific project. Use the break for updates and questions.
Pomodoro Technique for Writing Your Book
The Pomodoro Technique is great for writing sprints for authors.
Use the Pomodoro Technique if you find it hard to stay focused while writing your book or need help overcoming writers block or just need more structure for your writing time.
How to Use Pomodoro for Writing Sprints:
- Set a timer for 25 minutes and start writing. During this time, focus only on writing and avoid all distractions.
- Once the timer goes off, take a 5-minute break. This is a good time to stand up, stretch, and refocus your mind.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 for four more sprints, for a total of four sprints.
- After the fourth sprint, take a longer break (15-30 minutes) before starting another round of sprints.
- Repeat the process for as many sprints as you need.
The Pomodoro Technique helps to break up your writing time into manageable chunks and the short breaks give you time to recharge.
Use your writing breaks to take a quick walk or grab a snack.
I find it best to do one writing Pomodoro sprint/session a day.
